How to Feed Raw Diet

Raw Diet
ROOKIE LEARNING ABOUT RAW DIET

Raw diet for dogs and cats

Q. I can see I have the wrong idea with some things regarding raw diet.  So basically you just want to feed everything meat with bones!

A. Oh dear no, not especially.  I was merely suggesting instead of using the term RMB, you refer to the parts with terms the general population might respond to.  A butcher,  for example, is apt to consider a raw meaty bone a basically stripped clean cow femur, which is quite inappropriate.  However, while a meat guy might laugh were you to ask for some bone-in body parts,  he’d know what you mean.

Our dogs need mostly meat, so plan to feed lots of it–off bone and bone-in.

Q. My boyfriend is also a hunter, and I plan on getting my tag next year, so I think that will come in handy :) Actually, the only reason I am getting my tag is for my dog haha, maybe I’ll teach him to track down the kill ;)

A. Venison is the best of the best for raw diet.  I think getting a tag to benefit your dog is excellent!

Q.  What are the cheapest beef cuts? Brisket?

A. Depends on where you live, where you shop.  (There’s always a “depends”.)  I think beef heart is likely to be cheapest; but brisket may be (not in my neck o’ the woods though), and cheek meat tends to have a good reputation for price.  And of course, follow sales.  Getting beef trim through a buying group could easily beat all for pricing, plus you stand a chance of getting grass fed beef, which is very cool, but you may need time to get hooked up.

Q.  I’ve heard that some people don’t feed pork because of some reason. I also know that only a few people don’t do this, do you have to freeze pork longer?

A. Some people don’t feed pork for religious or cultural reasons, can’t argue with that.  However, there are others who are afraid to feed pork because of old wives’ tales and misinformation.  In the US, Canada, UK, Australia and some EU countries, pork can be and is often fed directly from the commercial source.  Pork from a private source the provenience of which may be suspect should be frozen before feeding, to kill parasites.

Pork is an easily digested, reasonably priced red meat and is generally well liked by dogs and cats both; definitely feed it.

Q.  With regards to salmon, I’ve been told you need to freeze it for at least a week, but I also know that they freeze it out at sea first to kill any parasites there might all ready be

A. Fresh, wild caught salmonids from the Pacific Northwest may carry a parasite than can be fatal to dogs.  Freezing the salmon, trout or steelhead kills the parasite.  It is not fatal to cats or humans.

Wild caught Alaskan salmon from the Arctic Ocean or Bering Sea is as good as you can get; if that’s what you have access to, rejoice.   Feed it,  eat it.

Farmed salmon is not an issue with parasites.  You can feed it straight from the store, although most farmed salmon will have been pre-froze anyway.  Some people seem to freeze it again at home, just to make sure.

Q. I am from BC, Canada, so all my fish come from here.  Just want to make sure, especially if I ever go fishing.

A. Wild caught BC salmon would be included in the “freeze before feeding” category, yes.

Q. What is the best book you recommend a newbie like me to read?

A. Isn’t any.

I have been feeding my 5 dogs raw diet for about nine months now with much success and after reading about such good progress with cats, I decided to start mine.  They are outdoor cats.  I started off with some small bits of chicken and chicken necks.  They tore into it.  After that first meal it was a go.  They get chickens thighs with or without bone and necks.  I also give them pork and they love it.  So happy my animals are all doing well with raw diet.

Q.  I have two dogs. One 108 lbs (although I need to get him down to about 100  or 95) and one is 85 lbs.

Morning Raw Diet

Ground meat of some kind. 1/2 lb ground meat of some sort. For each dog

A. Your big dogs have big teeth and strong jaws.  Let them do the work.  Feed through whatever amount of ground meat you bought and then don’t buy more.  Feed them whole hunks and chunks that they must work on and through.  Feed ground meat to the very young, the very old and the infirm.  Or save it for your own meals.

I don’t understand why you are thinking ground beef at all.  Now, an occasional meal of ground bison because that’s really all that’s easily available, I can understand that.  But plain old ground beef?  Does not compute….

After you’ve got yourself going, swap out beef for other meats–whatever you can find, the more the merrier.

Evening Raw Diet

Q.  Half a chicken for each dog. Once or twice a week switch this out with a  whole fish.

A.  This is okay to start but you will want more variety than this.  You should research pork roasts and necks and ribs, at the very least.

What sort of whole fish do you plan to feed?  Do you know if your dogs like fish?  Do they digest it well?  Perhaps you might postpone the fish until you have a better idea what what your dogs like and do well on.

Q.  Also, should I be worried about them getting too much vitamin A if they are eating the chicken liver every night?

A. You don’t have to feed them liver every night, and there’s no reason to.  However, on a daily basis, 5% is likely to be about 1.5 ounces for a 100lb dog; this is not a toxic dose.  Just don’t feed more than that. For the 85lb dog, 5% liver will be somewhat less than that; again, this will not be a toxic dose as long as you stick to what Ma Nature had in mind.

I am figuring these amounts on 2lb for the dog that should oughta be 100lb, and perhaps 1.75lb-ish for the 85lb dog, daily. Basing my answers on the following assumptions:  1) these are adult dogs and 2) they are do not have a high activity level.

The amount of meat is too much for each dog.  Your dog’s should start at approximately 2% of their adult weight per day.  For the dog that should be 100 lbs, that is 2 pounds a day.  the 85 pound dog should only get 1.7 lbs a day.  a half a chicken is at least 2 pounds, sometimes more.  Therefore, that 1/2 chicken is all the 100 lbs dog needs, and is slightly more than the 85 lb dog needs.

Next, at the beginning, start with just one protein source.  Chicken is often used because it is inexpensive and easy to acquire.  After about 2 weeks on chicken, you can slowly and gradually add another protein source.  When the dogs can eat a whole meal of the second protein source, continue with the two proteins for another week, and then introduce a 3rd protein source or liver.

Why are you considering feeding ground meats?  They really aren’t the best, although when you can get ground meat very cheaply, or free, it can be fed in a frozen state.  There are several reasons ground meats aren’t recommended.  It doesn’t offer the benefit of teeth/gum cleaning that you get from whole meat. (That is the reason for serving it frozen, it takes a bit more time to munch and swallow.)  Unfrozen ground meats are ‘enhaled’ in a few seconds, not much of a meal for your domestic wolf.

I would not be feeding the chicken liver at first for raw diet…..wait and introduce it at a later date.  Overall, this diet will be too high in chicken, and it will be better for your dogs if you have more red meat (beef, pork, goat, venison).  Chicken 2 – 3 days a week, fish 1 day a week, and red meat the rest seems to be a good balance.  Fish is not necessary for a canine diet, but it is an nice addition.  All of this to be worked up to over time.

As far as the grass eating goes – darn if I know!  My dog is a grass eater, and he has been on an excellent raw diet for most of his life.  Dogs are opportunistic eaters (eat whatever is available).  I let him much on the grass for a little while, and then distract him.
